Instagram usernames: @julietorrisen & @oliverstorkaas

Photographer Julie and her boyfriend Oliver lives in a house out on Brønnøya outside of Oslo. We met them out on the Island for a chat about their lives and style.

Describe a day in your everyday life

Oliver:

-          We wake up pretty early, have a great breakfast, a huge pot of coffee, and then we go outside. Whether it’s fixing up a boat, hanging out with our neighbors, fixing the house.

Julie:

-          ...building something, taking a trip with the boat.

How is this compared to the city life?

Julie:

-          We have neighbors our age, so we do a lot with them, and we have so many friends who wants to come over to visit. I feel like I’m more social here.

Oliver:

-          There’s even a little bar here. The first Friday of every month everyone who lives here meet up there and have a beer. It’s pretty nice. And it’s only 25 minutes away from Oslo, but it’s still quite rural. There are no cars here, so it’s really quiet. This boat takes about one and a half hours, but if we take one of the other boats it’s about 20-30 minutes.

-          The best thing about living here is that you can do whatever you want and still be able to go into the city and have fun with friends. I can also chop wood in the yard or fix things out here.

Where do you find inspiration?

Julie:

-          Everywhere on this island. As a photographer, I take long walks and just bring my camera. It gives me piece of mind.

Oliver:

-          My friends and Julie, and I like keeping busy with stuff, so I have a few too many boat engines and projects everywhere. But to make something work also brings me inspiration.

Julie:

-          The feeling of freedom is also really important, being able to do what we want.

What would best describe your style?

Both:

-          Durable.

Oliver:

-          Everything ends up becoming work wear, so that’s why denim is so great. It’s easy to get out stains, and it’s durable when you do a lot of physical work.

Julie:

-          It’s just good quality! And it looks nice.

Oliver:

-          Yes, it looks cool both in the city and on a tractor.

Julie:

-          Living here makes you more aware of owning less. I treasure fewer items in my closet than when I lived in the city. I would just go shopping all the time because I was surrounded by it. Now I buy stuff of better quality that lasts longer, like denim.

Oliver:

-          It’s not about where you live, but how you live. I choose better quality, so I don’t have to shop that much, and I can enjoy the clothes I have longer.
